The first final...

Posted on: May 23, 2008 5:42 am

What I'll take most from Wednesday is the difference between victory and defeat...

The width of a post.

Three time's Chelsea hit the post and none were a charm, while gutted in defeat, I'm not disappointed, for ages I watched Chelsea toil in mid table mediocrity, the odd relegation battle, but in the last ten years it's been like watching a child grow and learn, I've seen the progression from mid table to Europe qualification, to trying to muscle in on the title races, to being Champions, the quest through Europe has been the same, a cup winners cup victory got us noticed, successive semi-finals and finally the final itself and but for a slip and the width of a post, I'd have seen them rise to be the cream of Europe.

Not to be...

And this is why I'm not disappointed, Chelsea are still trying to establish themselves as a great club and like many they have to suffer defeat, you can't win them all, but with a final made and semi-final ghost's laid to rest, there's only one step left for Chelsea to join the elite, albeit at the bottom of that group but in that group none the less, Chelsea are still growing and establishing themselves...

Defeat is just part of the growing pains...

The final straw...

The king is dead, long live the jester...

Avram Grant... although I was never impressed with his managerial skills or happy with his appointment, on the day of his sacking, Avi finally got the credit he deserved.

Never loved by the Chelsea fans, struggled to keep the players in line and never helped by the press, Avi went about his job and kept the Chelsea band wagon rolling, he made 2 finals and scooped 2nd in the league, he may not have won anything but what he did do was remind everyone that life after Jose at the Bridge does exist, he could have easily dropped Chelsea out of the top four, not made any finals and really cleared out the locker room, destroying years of hard work... but a little integrity goes a long way.

Avi kept Chelsea in line and on Roman's course of glory, he may have fallen short but what he did leave behind was the unbeaten home record and a taste for European glory, honest European glory, Chelsea are still on course for ruling the world and Avi needs some acknowledgement for that, he may not have started it but he sure didn't end it either, there should be a smooth transition between managers and Chelsea will still be challenging on more than one front again next year.

Thanks Avi, nice job...

A new champ, a new hope...

Borg, McEnroe and Connors, Sampras and Agassi...

Federer and Nadal.

To have the fortune of witnessing this Wimbledon final was a pleasure. I've seen a few sporting finals in my time but few have left such a mark as this.

I enjoy my Tennis and watch without allegiance to any particular player, so to sit and just enjoy is great.

I like seeing history being made, so I started the match wanting Federer to win, six titles in a row... fantastic but to witness a man possessed with winning and sweep to a 2 set lead was unexpected and almost a shock, this is Wimbledon, grass, Roger's home, this doesn't happen...

Rafa Nadal, always in the shadow of Federer, having beaten Fed twice, had shown he could do it but this was the tournament to beat him at, that would show the world it's his time...

The 3rd and 4th set tie breaks had shown what a true champion Fed had been, many champions had seen defeat and embraced it like it was a good thing, not Fed, great shot after great shot, from both, took us to a 5th and final...

Nadal would win but not at a whimper, no hard fought and deserved.

We may see these 2 again next year at SW19...

P.S the best news out of Wimbledon this year... Britain has a champion!!!

Hello Laura Robson and welcome to the overbearing weight of expectance...

Lets hope you can do what the boys can't do...
